Dunbar Gram, D.V.M., a clinical professor of dermatology with the UF College of Veterinary Medicine’s department of small animal clinical sciences, passed away on August 3.

Gram joined the college faculty in 2013 as a clinical associate professor and had recently been promoted to clinical professor. He served as chief of the dermatology service for many years.

He received his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and his D.V.M. degree from Auburn University. Following veterinary school, he completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Illinois. He then completed a residency in veterinary dermatology at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

His work prior to joining the UF family included clinical and managerial duties at his four private practices in Virginia as well as teaching dermatology at the University of Prince Edward Island and the Royal (Dick) College of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In addition to leading the UF Veterinary Hospital’s clinical dermatology service and providing stellar and compassionate patient care, Gram coordinated the veterinary student dermatology clerkship, taught in the didactic dermatology and pharmacology courses, and mentored residents, graduate students and junior faculty members. He served on a variety of committees and served as a key opinion leader in his department as a member of its administrative council.

His research efforts were focused on the scholarship of education, where he invested in novel technologies and approaches to teaching. Throughout his career, he was also a major contributor to international education of veterinarians through the authorship of textbooks, case series, review articles and performance of continuing education lectures. Gram’s teaching philosophy blended practical approaches to medicine with evidenced-based science. He also served his specialty college, the American College of Veterinary Dermatology in many capacities.

“Dr. Gram was always present and engaged and available with a thoughtful word or deed and wise counsel,” said Caryn Plummer, D.V.M., (’02) interim chair of the department of small animal clinical sciences. “He wanted the best from and for his trainees and will be forever valued for his playful yet earnest disposition. Beloved by students, house officers, staff and colleagues, Dr. Gram will be greatly missed.”
